Travel Outside the Americas and the U.S. and Canadian Territories

Any baggage exceeding the checked baggage allowance shall be charged per kg, please see zones 1 to 5 of arrival/destination for more detail.

Travel to/from the Americas and the U.S. and Canadian Territories

The region is divided into zones 6 and 7, for which excess baggage charges are calculated per piece. (A surcharge is collected for oversized and overweight baggage.) The excess baggage charges include charges for the excess number of baggage pieces and excess size (weight) of baggage.

The charges for the excess number of baggage pieces are applied when three or more pieces of baggage are checked. The charge for the excess number of baggage pieces is collected per extra piece.

The following baggage fees are mainly based on flights operated by China Airlines.  Passengers traveling with a flight operated by our code-shared partners.

Charges for Oversized/Overweight Baggage

Any checked baggage, including first two pieces (free allowance) will be treated as oversized/overweight if its total dimension and/or its weight exceeds the limit stipulated in free baggage allowance. Multiple times of the Unit Rate will be charged to such baggage as the charges for excess baggage pieces, and an extra charge will be applied to the checked premium economy class and economy class baggage.

Any baggage whose total dimensions exceed 80 inches (203 cm) and/or of which the weight exceeds 70 lb (32 kg) shall not be carried as checked baggage unless prior handling arrangements have been made with the carrier(s). Any such baggage shall be excluded from the free baggage allowance and shall be weighed and charged at three times the applicable Unit Rates for under 45 kg .For each additional 10 kg , one additional Unit Rate shall be charged.

Notice of Prepaid Excess Baggage

  1. The tickets that you hold should be issued by either China Airlines (297) or Mandarin Airlines (803) (not applicable to tickets for infants). The service is only available for tickets booked for CI/AE operated flights or CI/AE code-shared flights. It does not apply to whole trip if your connecting flight is operate by another airline . Passengers who hold two separate tickets during the travel journey are not eligible for this service.
  2. Passengers should book their prepaid excess baggage allowance at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure of their flights via our official website. Otherwise, passengers will have to pay for excess baggage at the airport on the basis of the standard excess baggage charges.
  3. The excess baggage allowance can only be used by the passengers themselves. Pooling or transferring of baggage allowance is not permitted. Once the allowance is used, if the actual weight of the baggage upon check-in is less than the prepaid baggage allowance paid for, the unused portion is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  4. The prepaid excess baggage is valid for single sector to the place of stopover or final destination. Please note each passenger is limited to purchase once on line for each one-way journey.
  5. Limits of Purchasing Excess Baggage: In regions that measure the allowance by weight, each passenger can purchase prepaid excess baggage in units of 5kgs each time, up to a maximum of 50kgs. In regions that measure the allowance by piece, each passenger can only buy 2 extra pieces of baggage, and the weight allowance of the baggage will be based on the limits of the cabin class of the ticket. Each piece of checked baggage shall not weigh more than 32 kilograms. Pieces of baggage in excess of 32 kilograms must be repacked in separate bags.
  6. Different regulations and charges apply to special baggage, such as oversized and overweight bags, golf equipment, pets, and cabin baggage, which are not qualified for the prepaid excess baggage allowance.
  7. If travelers' itinerary are Hong Kong-Jakarta or depart from/arrive at the airports listed below, they cannot purchase prepaid excess baggage allowance online.
    • Mainland China: Dalian, Fuzhou, Haikou, Nanchang, Meixian, Ningbo, Sanya, Weihai, Wenzhou, Wuxi, Xuzhou, Yancheng, Yangzhou
    • Southeast Asia: Palau
  8. We do not provide the prepaid excess baggage allowance service if you are traveling via multi destination flights, which include destinations in the U.S. and Canada, and stopover at more than one destination.
  9. Passengers who purchase "Let’s Go" (no checked-in baggage) tickets are not eligible for the service. Passengers who want to purchase extra baggage allowances must do so using the original procedure.
  10. If there is a need for you to change to another flight, please contact China Airlines Customer Service during office hours or visit a CI branch office to make a change before your original flight departure. However, your departure and arrival destinations should be the same or your tickets are applicable for interchangeability as follows routes:
    . Taiwan- Guangzhou/Shenzhen is applicable to Taiwan-Hong Kong
    . Taoyuan-Pudong is interchangeable with Songshan-Hongqiao
    . Taoyuan-Narita is interchangeable with Songshan- Haneda
    . Taoyuan- Incheon is interchangeable with Songshan-Gimpo
  11. Once your tickets are used, your prepaid excess baggage fee cannot be refunded. If you haven't used your tickets and want a refund on your excess baggage, please visit CI official website or branch office for your ticket refund within 2 years of the date of purchase. 30% of your service fee will be charged as an administrative fee.
  12. All other transportation regulations of this airline shall apply to the Prepaid Excess Baggage Service.
  13. China Airlines reserves the right to interpret, revise or cancel the aforementioned articles at any time.
