China Airlines 777 Business Class Seat on Display in Taipei Red Dot Museum

Published: Dec 02, 2015

This year marked the 60th anniversary of the Red Dot Design Awards. Held in Germany, it is considered one of the very top international design awards. China Airlines took part in Red Dot for the first time by entering the Premium Business Class seat from its next-generation 777-300ER aircraft, winning the Best of the Best award with unanimous approval of the international judging panel, the first time an airline has won this award with a Business Class product. The new fleet’s Sky Lounge was also named a Red Dot Design Award winner. The Premium Business Class seat that won the Best of the Best Red Dot Design Award will be on display at the Red Dot Design Museum Taipei as part of the “World’s Best Product Design 2015/2016” special exhibition from December 3, 2015, through to March 13, 2016.
The prize-winning Premium Business Class on China Airlines’ NexGen 777 aircraft was praised by Ray Conner, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, as “one of the most beautiful designs for the 777” and China Airlines was invited to display the design at the Paris Air Show last June. The Premium Business Class cabin features the aviation industry’s first persimmon wood-grain interior finish. The design, inspired by Asian aesthetics, features dark-blue cloud patterns with muted gold tones, fully-flat seats with ergonomic cushions, and a total length of 78" (198 cm) which rivals that of First Class. The mood lighting and seat-side lamps give the cabin a unique sense of comfort. Other thoughtful touches include multi-purpose storage spaces for personal items, a mini-bar and USB and power sockets.
China Airlines’ NexGen product design has won numerous awards including the “Golden Pin Design Award” for “Best Design of the Year”, the top design award of the international Chinese-speaking community; a “Distinguished Enterprise Innovation Award” from the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ “National Industry Innovation Award”; “Taiwan International Creative Design Competition – Distinction”, and the “Taiwan Interior Design Award – Judges’ Special Design Award” from the Chinese Society of Interior Designers. International awards include an Outstanding Innovation achievement in the Global Traveler Leisure and Travel Awards; inclusion in TheDesignAir’s Top 10 airport lounges, No. 2 in the Top 10 “Passenger’s Choice” airline brands, Top 10 Business Classes and Top 10 Economy Classes; and the 2015 Good Design Award from Japan.
The NexGen 777 aircraft is now operating on Los Angeles, New York, Shanghai, San Francisco and Frankfurt routes to provide passengers with a more comfortable journey. (2015/12/02)
