The COVID-19 pandemic has created a very challenging business environment for the airline industry but China Airlines remains committed to its corporate mission of achieving economic, environmental and social sustainability. On the 14th of this month, China Airlines was recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) and ranked 3rd in the global airline industry for the fourth consecutive year. The airline’s efforts received further recognition today with the presentation of the Global and Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards. A special mention of all employees was made by CAL Chairman Hsieh Su-Chien and he attributed these achievements to everyone working together as a team. He also expressed his hopes that China Airlines will continue to move closer to fulfilling its sustainability goals.

China Airlines is the top airline in Taiwan’s aviation sector in terms of environmental management coverage as well as environmental and energy risk management mechanisms. The airline actively participates in local and overseas environmental organizations and proposals. Corporate practices have been strengthened to mitigate and respond to climate change. Its fulfillment of its duties and responsibilities in natural resources and environmental protection has won acclaim from all sectors. Awards from 2019 included the silver award for energy efficiency from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Taipei Energy Conservation Leadership Award, first place in Taoyuan International Airport’s energy conservation and carbon reduction competition, and high distinction in the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ water conservation counseling and improvement competition.

“Giving back to society and creating social value” is a key promise of sustainable development at China Airlines. “Enhancing the internationalization of local education”, “elevating the visibility of local brands” and “promoting social equity for the disadvantaged” have been defined as the three main social sustainability strategies. A number of related events have been hosted this year so far such as banquets for disadvantaged groups on traditional holidays, visits to elderly living alone, rural education and coastal clean-ups. No effort is spared when it comes to social welfare.

In future, China Airlines will continue to follow its corporate sustainability ideals and fulfill its corporate social responsibilities. China Airlines will provide passengers with the best and most dependable service by upholding the mission of “creating more wonderful moments through flying” and embracing its vision of “becoming the preferred airline in Taiwan.” At the same time, China Airlines will work together with all stakeholders to create even greater value.
