In case passenger holds two or more “Separate Tickets” for travelling, it means there are two or more “Condition of Contacts” on the trip, the origin station will not tag-through to the final destination, passenger has to pick up the baggage and re-check to the final destination at the transfer station.

Interline Baggage Rules

3. Interline Baggage Rules

According to IATA Resolution 302, the following steps process should apply for interline journeys.

  • If the published baggage provisions among all participating carriers are the same; these provisions will apply.
  • Where the one or more published baggage provisions differ between participating carriers, apply any common provisions and where provisions differ the published baggage provisions of the “Most Significant Carrier” (MSC) apply. If this is a code-share flight, apply baggage provision of the marketing carrier unless that carrier publishes a rule stipulating that it will be the operating carrier.
  • If the MSC does not publish its baggage provisions, apply the rule of the Check-in carrier.
  • If the Check-in carrier does not publish its baggage provisions, apply the baggage provisions of each operating carrier sector-by-sector.

Examples for illustration
Example 1: Taipei-{CI}-Hong Kong(stopover)-{AA}-Frankfurt(non-stopover)-{BB}-Zurich
In this example, the journey is broken up by a stopover in Hong Kong. Therefore, there are two sectors and each sector has a Most Significant Operating Carrier. From Taipei to Hong Kong, as China Airlines is the Most Significant Operating Carrier, the baggage policies of China Airlines will apply to this sector.  From Hong Kong to Zurich, as Carrier AA is the Most Significant Operating Carrier crossing from Asia to Europe, the baggage policy of Carrier AA will apply to the entire journey sector from Hong Kong to Zurich.
Example 2: Auckland-{CC}-Brisbane(non-stopover)-{DD}-Taipei(non-stopover)-{CI}-Heathrow In this example, there is one Most Significant Operating Carrier because there are no en-route stopovers on the journey. As China Airlines is the Most Significant Operating Carrier crossing from Asia to Europe, the baggage policies of China Airlines will apply for the entire journey from Auckland to London.
According to the regulations of the Canadian Transport Agency, when the departure or destination of a passenger's ticket itinerary is within the Canada, the first carrier on the ticket determines its free baggage allowance and related charges (including code-share flights). For example, if a passenger’s itinerary is Toronto-{AC}-Vancouver-{CI}-Taipei-{CI}-Ho Chi Minh City-{CI}-Taipei-{CI}- Vancouver -{AC}- Toronto, as the first segment takes Air Canada flight, the whole journey, including China Airlines segments and the return journey, must follow the Air Canada baggage policy.
