China Airlines Wins TCSA Award for Third Consecutive Year

Published: Nov 23, 2016

China Airlines was today (11/23) presented with two 2016 Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA) including a gold medal (1st place) in the transportation industry category of The Taiwan Top 50 Corporate Sustainability Report Awards, and the Climate Leadership Award. The awards were accepted by President Shih-chien Hsieh on behalf of China Airlines. The winning of these TCSA awards for the third consecutive year demonstrates the judges’ recognition of the company’s corporate sustainability practices.

TCSA is organized by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE) to encourage local companies to publish corporate sustainability reports and thus to increase their awareness and investment in sustainable development, environmental protection and social charities. TCSA is now in its eighth year and 138 companies have taken part so far. China Airlines became the first in Taiwan’s airline industry to publish corporate sustainability reports and to establish a CSR website in 2014. The second and third reports were published in June 2015, and June 2016 respectively. Corporate sustainability governance is now being implemented along six key axes: “Integrity Management, Persistence in Safety, Care for Employees, Friendly Environment, Co-prosperity Partner, Contribution to the Community.”

The efforts made by China Airlines over the years in carbon reduction and responding to climate change risks bore fruit this year with the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) classifying China Airlines as a Leadership (A-) enterprise. This was the best result of any company in the transportation and service industries in Taiwan. China Airlines’ active promotion of carbon management initiatives reflects its longstanding interest in climate and carbon reduction issues. In October 2016, China Airlines partnered with the Civil Aeronautics Administration to develop the Aviation Passenger Transportation Service - Carbon Footprint Product Category Rules with assistance from consultants at the Environmental Protection Administration of the Executive Yuan. The rules established a baseline for calculating carbon footprints of Taiwanese airlines and represents an international breakthrough as well. The four overriding principles for sustainable development at China Airlines are enforcing corporate governance, development of a sustainable environment, protecting social welfare, as well as strengthening corporate social responsibility and disclosure of sustainability information. Related governance accomplishments led to China Airlines’ inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) - Emerging Markets, the first airline in Taiwan and in global emerging markets to be so included.

Aviation safety is the bedrock of sustainable development at China Airlines. The passing of the recent IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) marked the seventh time since 2005 that China Airlines has received IOSA certification. The result was also the best to date with no identified items, no items under observation and zero defects. China Airlines has taken concrete action to ensure aviation safety, to provide passengers with the best services, as well as to enforce quality and safety management so that all safety measures conform to the highest international standards.

China Airlines will continue to embrace its original mission of “fulfilling corporate social responsibility” through energy conservation, carbon reduction and better aviation safety so that sustainability governance can become the core of the company’s operations and management. (2016/11/23)
