China Airlines Included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for Fourth Straight Year

Data pubblicazione: set 17, 2019

China Airlines has been recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) once again. In the results of DJSI’s 2019 review announced on the 13th of September, China Airlines became the only transportation company in Taiwan which was included in the “DJSI - Emerging Markets” for the fourth consecutive year.

DJSI is the first and most influential index on corporate sustainability performance and is an important reference for global institutional investors. Jointly established by Dow Jones in the U.S. and the Swiss sustainable investment company RobecoSAM in 1999, DJSI evaluates the economic, environmental and social sustainability performance of businesses in 61 industries to identify the top 10% in terms of sustainability performance in each industry. This year (2019), China Airlines once again stood out from the rest of the global aviation industry by coming in the third place. China Airlines also achieved the top score in six out of 24 categories, namely supply chain management, brand management, trustworthiness, environmental policy and management strategy, climate strategy, and passenger safety.

To fulfill its corporate mission of “creating more wonderful moments through flying”, China Airlines is actively promoting sustainability practices under its six key sustainability strategies of “safety, governance, fleet network, product services, group cooperation, and brand perception.” Short, medium and long-term sustainability goals have also been formulated in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For passenger safety, China Airlines continues embracing the IATA Operational Safety Audit, the highest standard of international certification used today; in response to climate issues, China Airlines introduced the framework of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), making it the first and only carrier in Taiwan to support the TCFD; sustainable alternative fuels were used for the ferry flights of new aircraft in partnership with Airbus and Air TOTAL. A symposium on sustainable alternative aviation fuels was subsequently held to share the experience with industry, government, and research experts; to show support for social responsibility and harmony, China Airlines is actively involved in humanitarian relief work, charity assistance, grassroots education and sponsorship of Taiwanese athletes; China Airlines hopes to fulfill its vision of becoming “the preferred airline of Taiwan” through its sustainability initiatives in the economic, environmental and social aspects.

The contributions of China Airlines and its employees have not gone unnoticed in Taiwan and overseas. To date, the carrier has been included in the FTSE4Good Emerging Index for four consecutive years, received the Bronze Class and Industry Mover awards again in the latest edition of the Sustainability Yearbook published by RobecoSAM, was ranked in the top 5% by the Corporate Governance Evaluation for two consecutive years, won the Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards for the fifth year in a row, and was chosen for inclusion in the Taiwan Sustainability Index (TWNSI) for the second straight year.
