China Airlines 2018 Beach Cleanup Reaffirms Commitment to the Environment

Published: Nov 10, 2018

The China Airlines annual beach clean-up event hosted on 11/10 saw Chairman Nuan-Hsuan Ho lead employees from across the CAL Group along with their friends and relatives to Zhuwei Harbor. More than 400 people took part in the event in a demonstration of how China Airlines is doing its part for Taiwan by supporting local communities and the environment.

In addition to members of the CAL Employee Volunteer Club, students from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Tamkang University and the Nursing Department at the University of Kang Ning were also invited to take part. According to Chairman Ho, this year marks the eighth consecutive year that the beach cleanup event has been held by China Airlines in support of International Coastal Cleanup; he thanked everyone who took part in protecting the planet this year as the example they set will educate future generations on the importance of environmental protection, and make true environmental sustainability and conservation possible.

China Airlines is actively involved in environmental protection and social welfare activities. The Volunteer Club was formed in 2011 in the spirit of community development, giving back to the community, as well as caring for the disadvantaged and society as a whole. In addition to the beach cleanup, the Club also visits local schools to teach aviation English and general knowledge every month. Other charitable projects include New Year banquets and assisting the elderly. Corporate social responsibility is an important part of China Airlines’ mission. Funds were donated to emergency rescue and reconstruction efforts in the wake of the Hualien earthquake this year. Discounted rates were also offered for the shipping of relief supplies for the Laos floods and Indonesia earthquake to bring love and warmth where it is needed.

International attention has been focused on issues such as climate change, energy conservation and carbon reduction in recent years. A variety of energy conservation projects are now being actively carried out at China Airlines. In 2017, for example, the administrative building and training center at CAL corporate headquarters were issued with the “Diamond-rated” green building mark by the Ministry of the Interior. Other accolades included Enterprise Environmental Protection Award (Gold Medal), Environmental Protection Honor Award, Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA), and a rating of Category B~A enterprise by the Carbon Disclosure Project. This year, China Airlines was once again selected by the Dow Jones Sustainability Emerging Markets Index making it the only transportation company in Taiwan to be included in the DJSI for three consecutive years.
