China Airlines’ Intent to Introduce 777 Freighter

Published: May 08, 2019

China Airlines and Boeing announced today that both companies have launched 777 Freighter (777F) project and signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 3 Firm and 3 Option aircraft orders.

From 2014 to 2016, China Airlines introduced a total of 10 fuel-efficient 777-300ER passenger aircraft. Both 777F and 777-300ER belong to the 777 family and are equipped with the same GE90 engine, which not only reduces maintenance cost and improves maintenance program management, but also provides more flexibility for common type pilot deployment. The current 777-300ER pilot could easily fly 777F after receiving difference training.

777F is the all-cargo version of the 777 twinjet, and is the most efficient and capable freighter available today. As for cargo loading operation, 777F and 747-400F ULDs are highly compatible which leads to smooth transit cargo handling. Compared to 747-400F, 777F enjoys more than 20% fuel savings which will allow airlines to be more competitive when facing high fuel cost.

China Airlines plan to operate these 777F mainly to Europe and North American market to meet the growing demand. At the same time, 777F will also replace some older 747-400F currently in service. With the added benefits of 777F, China Airlines will enjoy efficient operation and better economics. (2019/05/08)
