October 3, 2005, Taipei, Taiwan – Starting
from October, China Airlines began offering on-board broadband
Internet access on the Taipei-San Francisco route. Using this
groundbreaking new service, passengers carrying personal computers
with wireless network cards can now enjoy the convenience of
Internet while flying. There are only 9 airlines in the world
currently providing this cutting-edge service.
China Airlines launched its first Internet access service in
June, and became the first air carrier to provide Internet on
flights from Asia to the U.S. West Coast. So far, China Airlines
has installed Internet access equipment on 4 Boeing 747-400s, all
of which can provide this new service.
To promote the new service, China Airlines is providing 500
one-way free fly cards to passengers who purchase Taipei-San
Francisco tickets using the China Airlines web site (www.china-airlines.com)
China Airlines has designed flexible rate plans for the new
Internet service. Passengers will have the option of paying for a
full sector, or they can pay US$9.95 for the first half hour, and
US$0.25 for each additional minute. For the full sector rate, a
sector of less than 3 hours will cost US$14.95, a sector of 3-6
hours will be US$19.95, and a sector of more than 6 hours will
cost US$29.95. Passengers can pay by credit card, and Chunghua
Telecom users can also pay through a direct billing to their
monthly statements.
By installing antenna on aircraft, the Connexion by Boeing
system brings high-speed broadband Internet to CAL passengers via
satellite and ground operation centers. By the end of 2006, China
Airlines plans to provide the service on 13 B747-400 passenger
jets.
