Though modern commercial aircraft offers rapid,
convenient and safe transportation, some side effects
due to the cabin design, such as low air pressure
at high altitude (low oxygen and atmospheric pressure
inside the cabin), passenger cabin environment (air quality and low relative humidity), jetlag, motion and narrow space, may still cause some effects on those passengers who are ill. It should be a subject to pay attention to.
Common Sighs Advice for Patients & Pregnant Women Concerns from Flight Surgeons

  Peanut Allergies
Common Signs Symptoms and the Prevention
  • While descending, if you feel uncomfortable in ears or sinuses, try to swallow, chew or widely open your mouth to promote better airflow. If your baby have such problems, try to give them drinks or a pacifier to promote better airflow and relieve discomfort.
  • Avoid taking a plane within 24 hours after diving.
  • Make reservation for seats near the wings if you have an airsick problem.
  • Avoid heavy food, alcohol and caffeine drinks while onboard. Because these substances may cause you to lose fluid. Drink water and juice frequently.
  • People often feel dizzy when standing up suddenly from waking. It is a cause of low oxygen, alcohol, low activity, and sleepiness. We suggest you to do some exercise in your seat before standing up from waking.
  • Though the cabin air quality is far better than that of home and office, a cabin is still a public area where contamination is possible. We suggest patients suffered from contagious diseases not to take any plane.
  • Avoid wearing contact lens while onboard.
  • Use skin moisturizer.

Advice for Patients and Pregnant Women
Asthma & Chest Diseases Make sure to bring your inhaler with you and avoid causes of occurrence while onboard.
Heart Disease Heart attack occurs twice as often in the air than on the ground. Not to take air travel, if you have recently suffered from a heart attack.
Diabetes Take medication according to the time of the departure place. Order special meals while making reservation. Bring your medication in your hand-carry luggage. Always bring with you a written medical record of your health conditions.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Prolonged leg immobility will cause difficulty in blood circulation in the lower part of body, and subsequently forms blood clot in the deep veins within legs. Warning signs are pain & tenderness in the leg muscles, redness & swelling of the skin. If the blood clot moves to the lung, breathing difficulties can occur. It has little influence to healthy passengers, though it is dangerous to high risk passenger who suffered from heart disease, phlebitis, and abnormal anti-blood condensation functions, and passengers who have recently received venous surgery on legs.
* To avoid the occurrence of such signs and symptoms, we suggest you to:
> drink water and juice frequently, avoid smoking, alcohol
and caffeine drinks; wear loose clothes;
> do some aerobic exercise in seat, especially exercise for legs; and ask for advice from your physician before taking a plane.

Peanut Allergies

China Airlines has always done its best to provide passengers with safe and healthy in-flight service, including meals. Passengers and crew often have specific requirements for their in-flight meals due to religion, health, age or other special reasons. Therefore, we have designed 25 special meals based on official documents from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

China Airlines is aware that some passengers may have allergic reactions to peanuts that can be life threatening. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a peanut-free environment to our passengers. China Airlines serves meals in which peanut products may be an ingredient, and cannot guarantee against accidental cross-contamination during in-flight meal production. This is because peanut-based ingredients, peanut oil, and other products containing trace peanut elements, are extensively used throughout Asia. In addition, other passengers often bring their own peanut products onboard or to the VIP lounges, so residual peanut products may be left in common areas.

Due to the above-mentioned limitations, it is with regret that China Airlines cannot guarantee that it will provide completely peanut-free meals or a peanut-free environment. We strongly recommend passengers to consider the possibility of exposure during a flight and to consult their physicians to see whether they are fit to fly in the conditions explained above. It is also essential for passengers with peanut allergies to contact CAL’s local reservation office and submit a completed medical form from a physician at least 72 hours before departure, for CAL’s reference. Further, due to heightened aviation security regulations, if passengers are required to carry necessary medical treatment materials onboard, a certificate from a physician must be available upon check-in.

Passengers with peanut allergies should take all necessary precautions to minimize their potential exposure, including bringing their own food, prescription drugs, and other appropriate self-administered anaphylaxis treatments as prescribed by their physicians. The affected passengers are expected to self-administer their prescribed treatments as recommended by their physicians. Their guardians or companions should also be knowledgeable about the treatments. To decrease the risks and ensure flight safety, China Airlines will take all reasonable measures to accommodate passengers with allergic conditions, provided that circumstances allow such measures to take place, and that advance notice is given.

Pregnancy
It is not allowed to flight by most airlines after 32 weeks. Pregnant women are suggested to always check the immigration regulations of the destination before departure, to make sure they will not be rejected by the immigration.
