Baggage Fees
Passengers with checked baggage exceeding the free baggage allowance will be charged for extra baggage fees through the following criteria. Baggage fees include charges for excess piece(s), oversized baggages and speciality items (golfing equipment, surfboarding and windsurfing equipment, carriage of pet, snow/water skiing equipment, body-board equipment, and cabin baggage occupying a seat.)
Charges for baggage in excess free baggage allowance will be calculated by piece (Piece System), or per kilogram (Weight System) on a region basis. China Airlines destinations are classified into the following regions:
North America: destinations in U.S.A, Canada and Guam.
Europe : destionations in Holland, Germany, Italy, and Austria.
Asia: destinations in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, India, and Southeast Asia (China, Hong Kong, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Myanmar, etc.).
Oceania : Destinations in Australia and New Zealand

The following baggage fees are mainly based on flights operated by China Airlines. Passengers traveling with a flight operated by our code-share partners, please refer to here.
 

Piece System ( travels to/from U.S.A., Canada and Guam)

  1. The baggage fees under Piece System would be collected based on the commencing city of a purchased ticket. i.e. US$100 will be charged for the 1st excess baggage on each direction if a passenger is holding a round trip ticket from Los Angeles to Taipei and back.
  2. One time of applicable Unit Rates shall apply to:
  • Excess number (of baggage):each baggage exceeding 2 checked pieces.
  • Oversized piece(s): each checked baggage of which the total dimemsions is between 158 cm (62 inch) and 203 cm (80 inch) and the weight of which should be under 32 kg, apart from charges on excess number of baggage, if any.

Charges for Oversized/Overweight Baggage

Any checked baggage, including first two pieces (free allowance), will be treated as oversized/overweight if its total dimension and/or its weight exceed the limit stipulated in free baggage allowance. Multiple times of Unit Rate will apply to such baggage, apart from charges for excess piece of baggage, if any. In addition, Economy Extra Charge will apply to Economy Class checked baggage weighing between 23~32kg.

Any piece exceeding 2 checked baggage and weighing between 23 kg-32 kg, and of which the total dimensions exceeds 158 cm but not exceeding 203 cm.

Twice the applicable Unit Rate + one time Economy Extra Charge
First /Business Class

Excess Number + Oversized:
Any piece exceeding 2 checked baggages and of which the total dimensions exceeds 158 cm but not exceeding 203 cm.

Twice applicable Unit Rate
Note:
Any baggage of which the total dimensions exceeds 80 inches (203cm) and/or the weight of which exceeds 32 kg (70 lb.) shall not be carried as accompanied baggage unless prior handling arrangements have been made with the carrier(s). Any such baggage shall be excluded from the free baggage allowance and shall be weighed and charged at three times the applicable Unit Rates for the first 45 kg or fraction thereof; for each additional 10 kg or fraction thereof, one additional Unit Rate shall be charged.
 
Economy Extra Charge
Economy Class passenger carrying checked baggage (including first two pieces) will be charged with Economy Extra Charge if the baggage weigh 23~32kg, aside from excess number/oversized baggage fees, if any.

Assessment of Excess Baggage Charge in Weight System

Excess baggage in Weight System is calculated according to:

  • fare at the issue date of the excess baggage ticket.
  • the direction of travel.
  • The excess baggage charge rules of the first carrier is the primary standard, from the point for which the checked baggage allowance is exceeded to the first point at which the baggage is collected (excluding any transfer point where a passenger must collect his/her baggage because of imposed regulations/requirements, e.g. for customs clearance, change of airport, etc.)

Travels from Asia to Europe, inside Asia, and between Asia and Oceania:

  • Baggage in excess of the checked baggage allowance shall be charged per kg at the rate of 1.5% of the highest normal direct adult one way Economy Class fare
  • To determine the excess baggage charge, the number of kilograms of excess baggage is multiplied by the applicable rate, fractions of less than one kilogram are charged for as the next higher full kilogram.

Notes:

  • Skis, Surfboards, Windsurfing boards, Golf equipment...etc and other bulky baggage will apply the same practice as stipulated above.
  • Offline stations or reverse from Southeast Asia/Japan/Korea/ Australia to CI Europe gateways will remain current practice (1.5% of the highest normal direct adult one way Economy Class fare).
 
Excess Baggage Fee for Specialty Items

Golfing Equipment

Piece System

Weight System

  • Golfing equipment consists of one golf bag and one pair of golf shoes.
  • If in excess of the normal free allowance, shall be charged 50% of the applicable charge.
  • This special charge is limited to one golf bag per passenger; for any golf bag in excess thereof, the normal charge shall apply
  • Golfing equipment consists of one golf bag containing not more than 14 clubs and 12 balls, and one pair of golf shoes, weighing not more than 15 kg in total.
  • The charge shall be equal to the applicable rate of 6 kg of excess baggage when the above articles are not included in the normal free allowance.
  • When the above articles are included in the normal free allowance, any overweight resulting from such inclusion shall be assessed at the above special charge (6 kg) or the normal excess baggage charge, whichever is lower.
  • For any weight of the golfing equipment in excess of 15 kg, the normal excess baggage charge shall apply.

Surfboarding, Windsurfing Equipment

Weight System

  • Surfboard/windsurfing equipment shall not be included in the checked baggage allowance.
  • One board not exceeding 109 inches (277cms) to be charged at 100% of one excess baggage charge, or
  • One board exceeding 109 inches (277cms) to be charged at 150% of one excess baggage charge.
  • Additional board(s) will be charged at the same rate as the 1st board.

Except to/from/within South West Pacific, surfboard/windsurfing equipment may include in the checked baggage allowance. If in excess of the normal free allowance, the charge shall be:

  • One board not exceeding 109 inches (277cms) to be charged at the applicable rate for 5 kilograms of excess baggage.
  • One board exceeding 109 inches (277cms) to be charged at the applicable rate for 8 kilograms of excess baggage.
  • This special charge is limited to one board per passenger. Additional boards at the applicable excess baggage charge

Carriage of Pets
Domestic dogs and cats which are considered as “PETS” may be accepted for carriage as checked baggage conditionally. Please contact CI for details of conditions and restrictions. The pet(s) and the container shall not be included in the passenger‘s free baggage allowance, and the excess baggage charge shall be assessed as follows:

Snow/Water Skiing Equipment (consisting of one pair of skis, one pair of ski poles and one pair of boots, or one snowboard, one pair of boots, or one pair of standard water skis or one slalom water ski)

  • If the snow/water skiing equipment is in excess of the normal free allowance, it shall be charge at 33% of the applicable charge.
  • However, the special charge is limited to one set of the above articles per passenger; for any snow skiing equipment in excess thereof, the normal charge shall apply.
  • When the above articles are in excess of the free baggage allowance, the charge shall be equal to the applicable rate of 3 kilograms of excess baggage charge.
  • When the above articles are included in the free baggage allowance, any overweight resulting from such inclusion shall be assessed at the above special charge (3 kilograms) or the normal excess baggage charge, whichever is lower.

Body-board Equipment can be included in the checked baggage allowance. But the maximum size of body-board is limited as 120cm (length) X 50 (width).


Excess Valuation Charge

  • China Airlines accept a declaration of valuation of no higher than USD2,500.00 (or equivalent at the bankers buying rate (BBR) at the date of commencement of travel) per passenger. Passenger wishing to make declaration of valuation over such amount should be encouraged to seek private insurance.
  • Excess valuation is not available on items such as money, jewelry, precious metal, negotiable papers, securities, business documents, samples, paintings, antiques, artifacts, manuscripts, irreplaceable books or publications, etc., which in general terms are classified as "Valuables", when such valuables are included in checked baggage.
  • Excess value declaration is limited to CI on-line checked baggage only. Value declaration for carry-on baggage shall not be accepted.
  • Value declaration and the consequent liability do not apply to pooled baggage. Each passenger must declare the value and pay the applicable charges separately.
  • When such a declaration is made, a charge of USD1.00 will be applied for each USD100.00 of valuation.
 

Cabin Baggage Occupying a Seat

The charge of each seat occupied by such baggage shall be the fare, which would have been charged to a passenger occupying such seat(s) for the travel to be undertaken at the time of booking the additional seat(s). Passengers can purchase any applicable fare types, excluding inclusive tour, child or other rebated fares such as spouse, agent or ship’s crew fares. The passenger’s checked baggage allowance shall not be increased when using this facility.
