August 10, 2010, Taipei, Taiwan -- China Airlines today proudly unveiled the new “Salute Our Blue Sky” section on its website to share information about the airline’s efforts to protect the environment, conserve energy and achieve greenification with the people of Taiwan and consumers all around the world. The new website section chronicles past, present and future efforts made by CAL to protect the environment.

China Airlines has dedicated itself to protecting the environment, conserving energy and achieving greenification for many years. Substantial examples of CAL’s efforts and achievements include:

In May of 2007, CAL inaugurated a dedicated Environmental Affairs Working Group (EAWG), which set four primary objectives of reducing fuel consumption, reducing carbon emission, reducing energy consumption and reducing waste. EAWG has established indexes for each of these objectives, under which CAL staffs have actively worked to cut back on aviation fuel consumption, carbon emissions, water used in offices and during aircraft maintenance, electricity consumption and production of waste.

In February of 2008, together with the government’s Environmental Protection Administration and National Central University, CAL signed the “Taiwan-European Union Pacific Greenhouse Gases Measurement Project Memorandum of Understanding.” Under the terms of this cooperative agreement, CAL collects data regarding atmospheric emissions made by its aircraft at high altitudes during flight and provides the data to scholars and professional organizations in Taiwan and abroad for the purpose of conducting carbon emissions research.
In August of 2009, IATA officially recognized CAL as an “e-freight capable” carrier forming a part of the global “e-freight” supply chain. This recognition was granted after CAL successfully launched the first-ever paperless cargo delivery flights from Taiwan, a major step in promoting international environmental protection.
In November of 2009, CAL received “Reasonable Assurance Status” certification from the government’s Environmental Protection Administration, becoming the first airline in Taiwan to complete the greenhouse gas inventory and verification process and effectively implement low pollution and high energy conservation environmental standards.
Throughout the recent years, CAL has taken part in various environmental protection activities such as the 2010 “World Record Tree Planting Attempt” with the Hsinchu City Government, the 2009 “Summer Solstice Lights Off For An Hour” activity organized by the Society of Wilderness, and the 2008 “I Love Cool Earth” program with the Taipei City Government.

“Salute Our Blue Sky” presents the substantial efforts made by the company and all of its staff members to protect the environment, reduce carbon emissions, achieve greenification and improve eco-efficiency. Through the website, CAL is sharing its environmental protection ideals aimed at treasuring the planet’s resources, inviting people in Taiwan and consumers around the world to get involved in protecting the environment and cherishing our planet.
